In creating the all-new 2016 Fiat 500X, executives at the new Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles started with American tastes and preferences specifically in mind. In fact, despite its name and familiar styling, the small crossover SUV shares little in the way of parts with the cutesy 500 hatchback. It actually shares a newly developed platform with the upcoming Jeep Renegade, though the cars couldn't be more different in visual character.

The 500X, more than the four-door 500L that is already on sale now, succeeds in translating the DNA that makes Fiat’s tiny trademark Cinquecinto model so appealing to a new larger package. That design-forward spirit carries over to its interior, where you’ll find body-color trim, a circular instrument panel, and more practical concerns, like five seats with seat heaters up front and enough space for full-sized adults in the rear. Like other Fiat models, the 500X shares its highly-rated UConnect infotainment system with Chrysler, here running on a 6.5-inch touchscreen.

Two engine choices will be available. Base models see a 160-horsepower 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the upscale option is FCA’s 2.4-liter TigerShark MultiAir2 four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and a 9-speed automatic.

Buyers will also have the choice of FWD or AWD, the latter featuring side-to-side torque vectoring control plus a fuel-saving rear axle disconnect system for when AWD is not needed. With its platform shared with Jeep, you can be the 500X will be good for all weather conditions and maybe even a little fun in the mud.

To be built in Melfi, Italy, the 2016 500X will be on sale in the first half of 2015. Pricing will be available closer to its release, but Fiat confirms it will be positioned just above the 500L, which starts at $19,050 before destination charges. That would put the 500X right in the range of the 2015 Honda CR-V and 2015 MINI Countryman.
